New Grape Vine Growth Was Frost Killed
Bad news. All that lush new grape vine growth was frost killed when we had a sudden late frost to the mid 20s (F) on the night of May 22, 2015. There must have been 30-50 tiny baby wine grape bunches popping out with the unusual hot May weather. Ah, the trials and tribulations of being a northern grape grower.
Since then there are a few secondary buds popping out, and just a few leaves and sprouts that didn’t get hit for some odd, random reason. There was also a whole young plant that was not covered, but appears virtually untouched by frost. I’m keeping an eye on that one in the future. It may be an unusually frost-hardy plant.
A reader sent me this email this morning about this post:
“Just saw your frosted grapes and wanted to share with you the pic that my sister and brother-in-law sent me from Denver @9pm last night. This hail storm happened about 7pm yesterday. Says it shredded his tomato plants. They’ve already had 2 cars totaled from the body damage because of the hail in the past year in Denver.”
